Description: Note taking can be a laborious task for even the most attentive of us, and recalling our revision notes taken can be just as arduous. Rigid lists, catalogued by number, written in a dull black or blue pen and a continuous line of letters and figures mean that a large number of people struggle to concentrate on, and recall their notes later, especially those suffering from some form of learning disability. |

Mind Mapping is a system that aims to alter how an individual takes
notes. It involves the use of colour and imagery to create a diagram of
any given topic. The reasoning behind mind mapping is; the left side of
the brain is responsible for numbers, logic, lists etc… the right side
of your brain is responsible for colour, dimension, rhythm etc.. Most of us use the left part of our brain when we study. Tony Buzan, creator of Mind Mapping, believes that this literally translates as only using half of our brain power rather than utilising it all. He demonstrates that our minds think in picture and colour, not in lists and words. When you think of the phrase “My house”, you don’t think of the written words, you see an image of your house. The colours are visible, the windows are visible. Therefore, when learning, why not use colour and imagery to help retain images rather than learn off lists? |

The system is proving to be quite beneficial for those suffering from
learning disabilities such as dyslexia. The reasons being: • The maps are in colour • They look at the global picture of any given topic • They clearly illustrate the relationships between different aspects of the topic • They are based on imagery and pictures. • Once a map is finished, all the information is visually summarised on a single sheet in front of the child, in an organised manner. Tony Buzan has three books explaining and demonstrating how Mind Mapping works.
